Italy waited until the very end to beat Argentina in Group G, ending Argentina’s wait for the first-ever Women’s World Cup victory. Cristiana Girelli, a striker for Juventus, came off the bench to head in the winning goal in the 87th minute, moving the Azzurre into a tie for first place with Sweden and setting off wild celebrations. Giulia Dragoni, who is 16 years old, created history by being Italy’s youngest World Cup participant.

Italy’s Women’s World Cup campaign got off to a tough start with a 1-0 victory over Argentina thanks to a late goal from substitute Cristiana Girelli.
Milena Bertolini’s team appeared destined to lose the Group G match in Auckland after having two first-half goals ruled out for offside and finding it difficult to break down the tenacious Argentinians.
However, Girelli, who replaced Giulia Dragoni, a 16-year-old midfielder who was the youngest player to ever play for Italy at a Women’s World Cup, inside the final 10 minutes, headed home with three minutes left to secure victory.
Italy and Sweden, who they play next in Wellington, are now tied for first place in the group after Italy’s goal, while Argentina’s quest for their first-ever World Cup victory will continue against South Africa in Dunedin.
Within the first two minutes, Mariana Larroquette attempted a bicycle kick for the goal but watched her effort miss the target. Argentina nearly had a stunning start.
However, the Azzurre soon found their footing and started to control the action as they searched for a method to breach their opponents’ defense.
With a last-second goal, Sweden defeats South Africa in an incredible comeback.

With seven minutes left, Dragoni’s ticket was punched as Italy coach Bertolini substituted Girelli for another attacker in an effort to find a winner.
And it paid off when, with three minutes left on the clock, the seasoned Juventus forward leapt to meet a cross and head home the winning goal.
Florencia Bonsegundo’s ferocious free kick forced a quick save from Francesca Durante, who dove right to beat it away as Argentina threatened an equalizer in stoppage time.
As the South Americans advanced in pursuit of a tying goal, Italy threatened to score again on the break, but Girelli’s 54th international goal was the game-winner.
